The Head of State has signed the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan ratifying the Protocols introducing amendments to Articles 50 (a) and 56 of the Convention on International Civil Aviation. These amendments were previously approved by the Senate of Parliament at an extended session.
The amendments provide for an increase in the membership of the ICAO Council from 36 to 40 member states.
For the amendments to enter into force, they must be ratified by at least two-thirds of ICAO member states (128 countries). To date, more than 123 states have already completed the ratification process.
With the adoption of this Law, Kazakhstan becomes one of the first countries in Central Asia to ratify these amendments to the Chicago Convention.
This step confirms the country’s commitment to its international obligations, as well as to the goals and principles of the Chicago Convention — from advancing effective governance to strengthening international cooperation.
Moreover, the signing of the Law grants Kazakhstan the right to participate in shaping international aviation safety standards and aviation policy, and also formalizes the country’s intention to nominate its candidacy for the ICAO Council at the upcoming Extraordinary Session of the ICAO Assembly.
